Cairns, a tropical city located in the far north of Queensland, Australia, is often known for its sun-soaked beaches, lush rainforests, and proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. However, as the sun dips below the horizon, Cairns reveals a different side—one that is vibrant, lively, and full of exciting nightlife. After spending several days soaking in the daytime beauty of the region, I couldn’t wait to explore what Cairns had to offer after dark.
Cairns may not have the big-city nightlife scene of Sydney or Melbourne, but it has its own unique charm, with a mix of laid-back bars, wild nightclubs, and stunning nighttime activities. If you’re planning a trip and wondering what to do when the sun goes down, here’s a guide to the best nighttime attractions and activities in Cairns.
1. Sunset Views at the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon
Before diving into the more vibrant night activities, it’s worth mentioning the relaxed and breathtaking sunset views you can catch right at the Cairns Esplanade. This is where my evening usually begins. While the city is known for its incredible natural beauty during the day, it’s also a perfect spot to watch the changing hues of the sky as the sun sets over the Coral Sea. The Esplanade Lagoon offers a large saltwater pool, and with the city skyline in the background, it’s one of the best places to soak in the tranquil vibes as evening sets in.
I’ve spent countless evenings here, swimming under the golden sky, or just strolling along the boardwalks, watching the city’s lights flicker on. If you’re in the area before heading out to explore the nightlife, make sure to pause here for some quiet reflection or a swim.
2. The Reef Hotel Casino
For those looking to get a bit of excitement in their night, the Reef Hotel Casino is a top choice. The casino offers everything from poker and blackjack to roulette and, of course, the countless slot machines that line the room. It’s a lively and glamorous place, perfect for those who want a bit of thrill. I walked in one evening expecting to simply watch the games and enjoy the atmosphere, but I quickly found myself at a poker table, testing my luck.
Aside from the gaming tables, the casino also has several bars and restaurants, making it a great place to spend a few hours. After winning (and losing) a bit of cash, I grabbed a cocktail at one of the bars and chatted with a few fellow travelers. The Reef Hotel Casino is a social spot, and whether you’re there for the games or just for the vibrant environment, you’ll find plenty to do.
3. Night Markets: A Treasure Trove of Local Goods

For a more relaxed yet thoroughly enjoyable experience, Cairns’ Night Markets should be on your list. Located right on the Esplanade, the night markets are a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience local culture. The markets open every evening at around 4 pm and run until 11 pm.
I spent an entire evening wandering through the stalls, where I found everything from handmade jewelry and artwork to tropical fruits and locally produced skincare products. It’s an excellent spot to pick up souvenirs, or simply sample the local food. The night markets are a lot more than just a place to shop—they’re a place to soak in the vibrant energy of the city at night.
The food stalls here are a treat, and one of my favorites is the fresh seafood, including prawn skewers and fish tacos. They also have plenty of Asian-inspired dishes, like dumplings and satays. Every time I pass through, I can’t resist grabbing a bite to eat.
4. Cairns Nightclubs and Bars
Cairns is not exactly famous for its massive clubs, but there are still plenty of great venues to party the night away. The nightlife here caters more to a laid-back, tropical vibe, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t great spots to dance, drink, and enjoy good company.
The Woolshed is one of the most iconic clubs in Cairns. It’s a true backpacker hotspot, with a fun, casual atmosphere, great music, and affordable drinks. The bar has a large dance floor where people of all ages come together to dance the night away to a mix of classic hits and modern tunes. I’ve spent many nights here, and it’s always an unforgettable experience. If you’re in the mood for some good old-fashioned fun, the Woolshed will deliver.
Another bar worth visiting is Rattle N Hum. Located near the Esplanade, it’s a relaxed pub-style venue with live music most nights. The place has a great energy, and whether you’re there for the music, the cocktails, or just to enjoy the atmosphere, it’s definitely a place worth checking out.
5. The Cairns Night Safari
One of the most unique activities you can do in Cairns at night is the Cairns Night Safari. This is a chance to venture into the wilds of the surrounding rainforest, but with a twist: instead of hiking through the jungle during the day, you do it at night, when the creatures that call the rainforest home come out to play.
The Night Safari begins after sunset, and as you board the safari bus, the guide provides insight into the local wildlife. While there’s a bit of a spooky vibe—especially when you stop and turn off the lights to experience true darkness—the experience is incredibly exciting. You might encounter animals like nocturnal marsupials, owls, and even crocodiles. I loved how intimate and immersive the experience was, as the rainforest came alive in ways I didn’t expect. It’s the perfect blend of adventure and nature, especially if you’re an animal lover.
6. Cairns Aquarium: A Glimpse Under the Sea After Dark
Cairns Aquarium isn’t just a daytime attraction. Every now and then, the aquarium hosts special “Night at the Aquarium” events where the experience is transformed with dimmed lights, glowing tanks, and special behind-the-scenes tours. The underwater world takes on a whole new vibe when the lights are out, and the creatures in the tanks seem even more mysterious and magical in the evening. I joined one of these special tours and had the chance to feed some of the marine life, as well as learn about the incredible ecosystems that thrive beneath the surface.
This experience is perfect for those who want to see a different side of the ocean and its creatures, all while enjoying a more serene atmosphere without the daytime crowds.
7. Moonlit Dinner Cruises

If you’re looking for a romantic and tranquil evening, consider a moonlit dinner cruise along the Coral Sea. These cruises offer a stunning view of the coastline under the stars, and the atmosphere is always elegant and relaxing. A typical cruise will include a multi-course dinner with seafood and local produce, along with live music to set the mood. As you sail away from the Cairns Marina, the city’s lights slowly fade into the distance, and the natural beauty of the sea and sky takes over.
I joined one of these dinner cruises on a clear night and was completely enchanted by the view. The quiet hum of the boat, the fresh sea air, and the sparkling water beneath the moonlight made for an unforgettable evening. If you want to enjoy a peaceful and scenic experience, this is the perfect option.
8. Cairns from Above: A Nighttime Skyrail Ride
For those who want to experience the beauty of Cairns from above, the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway offers an incredible ride. The cableway typically operates during the day, but on special occasions, they offer night rides. This allows you to get a bird’s-eye view of Cairns, the Coral Sea, and the surrounding tropical rainforest in a way that’s simply magical.
While I didn’t take the night ride myself, I’ve spoken to several travelers who have, and they rave about how the lights of the city and the stars above create a surreal experience. This is definitely on my list for the next time I visit Cairns.
9. Cairns: A City That Never Sleeps
Cairns may be a small city, but it certainly doesn’t sleep at night. Whether you’re in the mood for an adventurous safari through the rainforest, a relaxed drink by the beach, or a high-energy night out on the town, Cairns offers something for every kind of traveler. The nightlife here is laid-back but full of character, and the activities I’ve listed here are just a few of the many ways you can make the most of your nights in this tropical paradise.
I’ve loved exploring the after-dark side of Cairns. Whether it’s strolling through the night markets, hitting up the local bars, or enjoying a romantic cruise along the coastline, Cairns offers a blend of relaxation and excitement that makes it unique. Each night brings something different, and it’s one of the reasons I always find myself returning to this vibrant city.
